GETTING STARTED

The conference time schedule and detailed program can be found on the Program page.

Participants who have completed the Registration of VRST2021 will be emailed a link to log in to the online platforms Discord and Gather.town. (The subject of the email is "VRST 2021 attendance information.")

At the Discord, participants can access to Zoom links for attending oral presentations (including Paper session, Opening/Closing, Keynotes, Sponsor talk). In addition, participants can communicate with each other via text and audio.

At the Gather.town, participants can access the Poster/Demo and Sponsor exhibition. Presenters will be stationed at each booth during the Poster/Demo session, but you can watch the videos and posters at any time during the conference.

Get set up with Discord

The VRST 2021 will be utilizing Discord as the platform for discussion and communication between participants of the conference.

Discord is an online platform that allows community members to share content and communicate via text chat, voice chat, and video stream.

To access the VRST 2021 Discord server, connect your Discord account to the VRST 2021 server using the invitation URL sent to you by email.

Getting Discord

First, you will download the Discord software. The software is available for multiple platforms and there is also an in-browser version, but we suggest downloading the desktop client for Mac or PC.

Logging in for the first time

Next, you will want to join the VRST 2021 server by simply clicking the invitation link sent to you by email, you will be invited to join the server with a page that prompts you for a username. Choose a username to log in. Alternatively, if you’ve used Discord before, you can log in using that username and password.

Setting up VRST 2021 Discord server for the first time

Once you’ve joined the server, there are several steps that you’ll need to take to get full registered access.

  • Please set your nickname to be your full name registered for the conference with. To do this, right-click on the server icon in the leftmost column, select “Edit Server Profile”, and then update your nickname.
  • Please check your role in Discord. Click on the voice chat channel, such as "room 1" on the left, and you will see your name. You can also check your name by clicking on your name in the member list on the right. For a list of roles, please refer to the "instruction" channel in Discord.

If you have any questions, please post them in the support-desk channel.

Get set up with Gather.town

The VRST 2021 will be utilizing Gather.town as the platform for the Poster/Demo and Sponsor exhibition.

Logging in for the first time

Gather.town works in a web browser. Please access the page (https://gather.town/app/JpiYSGDNG3zI86qg/vrst2021) and then enter the password that will be emailed to registered participants.

Next, you can edit your character's appearance and name.
Our recommended name format is “Name (Affiliation).”  If you are a Poster/Demo presenter, please add “[P]” at the beginning of the name (e.g., “Kenji Ozawa (CG-ARTS)”, “[P] Kazuyuki Fujita (Tohoku Univ.)”).

After selecting the appropriate camera, microphone, and speaker (which are used to communicate with other participants), press the "Join the Gathering" button.

Basic Operation

Gather.town is primarily operated using the keyboard. Here are some of the most frequently used operations (please see the official support page for more details.)

  • [w][a][s][d] or arrow keys - Move around the venue
  • [x] key - interact with an object (used to enlarge the posters or videos)
  • [g] key - Enter ghost mode and walk through other participants
  • [z] key - Dance (used to convey your feelings of like)

 

Venue

The venue for VRST 2021 consists of an initial area (with sponsor area) and three rooms (used for Poster/Demo sessions) connected to it.

Posters and Demos

All posters and demos can be viewed at any time during the conference. You can freely interact with the poster boards and video monitors placed at each booth.

During the Poster/Demo session, the presenters will stand by their booth and be available for video communication with you (In addition to Gather.town, a channel for each presentation is created in advance on Discord, where you can also communicate with each other by text.)
