About Cyprus

Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and has an area of 9,251 square kilometers, of which 1,733 are forested. The present population of Cyprus is 755,000 of whom 85% are Greek Cypriots, 12% Turkish Cypriots and 3% are foreigners residing in Cyprus. According to mythology Cyprus is the birthplace of the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. The island is both an ancient land, with an eleven thousand year-old history and civilization as well as a young independent Republic since 1960. The capital of the island is Lefkosia (Nicosia) with a population of 198,000 in the sector controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus. It is situated roughly in the center of the island.

Lemesos is the second biggest town of Cyprus situated in the south coast and its biggest Municipality. It has experienced great development after the tragic events occurred by the Turkish invasion in 1974, becoming the biggest port in the Mediterranean transit trade. Lemesos has since then become one of the most important tourism, trade and service-providing centre in the area. Lemesos is renowned for its long cultural tradition. A wide spectrum of activities and a great number of museums and archaeological sites are proposed to the interested visitor. A unique combination of ancient, Frankish, Byzantine and other modern influences is observed.
